It actually sounds kind of fun with the mostly eager learners, and the history topic...but maybe if you had a month off at the end instead of two weeks it would've been even better?

Some of my friends who attended Colorado College loved the block-course structure where it was one class at a time, sequentially, for the whole school year (about 4-5 weeks times 7-8 classes).

Switzerland and parts of Germany have this weird schedule now where they have tons of 1-2 week breaks throughout the year, and then only 3-4 weeks off in Summer. I think it sounds terrible. We're "normal" here in Austria with July to early Sept off.

Concentrating intensely on one class at a time is in many ways, ideal. I wouldn't mind taking a class like that again myself. I had the chance to visit some German schools many years ago. You can't beat the beer taps in the teacher's lounge, though!

I definitely would’ve fallen into the group that needed time away. Also, please tell me you’ve seen Mark Harmon’s version of summer school?

Haha yes I saw it. What was that, forty years ago?!

Interesting factoid - there was never a summer school option in French for my kids, so I never did that gig. Those who shirked their duties during the school year, smugly saying to me, "I'll just take it in summer school," were abruptly brought to the harsh reality that it was not an option. "Désolée, mes amis, you'll be back right here with Madame in September to repeat the entire year". Quite the impetus for them to get the work done. However, it did remove the golden opportunity to do the advanced work you were able to complete with the self-starters you were fortunate to teach. Nicely done, mon cher collègue.

Wow Paul I am impressed!

My wife has worked at a school for almost 25 years. I am just about to finish my 4th at Will East (for those who don’t know Paul’s old school) and my son just finished his 6th or 7th year in education (he’s at Heim middle)

NOW I understand why teachers need the summer off! Kids are exhausting!

I am impressed that you did 35 years of summer school! Amazed really. Yours is a retirement well earned!

I learned something. I always thought summer school was filled with kids who failed a course. You have taught me that’s not the case. As an Attendance Aide I sometimes see the kids schedules. I am always amazed at how many of our kids take multiple AP course. Some have schedules comprised entirely of AP courses. So I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that they would continue that work ethos through the summer session.

Btw I’m sure you heard but just in case you haven’t the annual school rankings just came out and we were ranked #1 in Western New York this year!

We’re #1! We’re #1! We’re #1! lol.

Thanks, I’m getting used to summers off! Go #1!
